INSTRUMENTAL STUDIES

Orchestral Instruments, Accordion and Guitar

 
Faculty of Instrumental Performance

Full-time 1st and 2nd cycle studies (bachelor's and master's degree)

 
FOR STUDENTS

The curriculum of the instrumental studies major primarily includes classes and tasks that strengthen workshop and artistic skills. A wide selection of theoretical and humanistic subjects allows students to learn how to shape free and creative artistic expression. Additional lessons and master classes with specialists from Poland and abroad, are an integral part of the students’ training process. In recent years, the University has been visited by, i.a.: Tomasz Bińkowski, Sebastian Wypych, Mariusz Patyra, Stephen Leisring, Manu Mellaerts, János Bálint.
Students are trained in the first and second degree programs under the guidance of a teaching and research staff composed of both excellent educators with years of experience and young professionals who are outstanding artists in their specialties. A wide range of subjects is provided to develop skills in solo playing, playing with a pianist, in a chamber ensemble, as well as in chamber, wind and symphony orchestras. The performed repertoire allows students to move freely in various musical styles – from Baroque to contemporary music. A number of specialized subjects and optional lessons cover knowledge of music theory and music history, as well as a variety of fields and issues necessary for the development of a musician, an artist and a university graduate.
Students take part in concerts, competitions, specialized seminars and conferences organized within the university and externally. Each year, students participate in several artistic projects, playing in the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and the Modern Music Instrumental Ensemble.

 
GRADUATE PROFILE

The Graduate of this specialization is a comprehensively educated musician, an instrumentalist with extensive theoretical and practical knowledge enabling independent stage activity, work in chamber ensembles and various types of orchestras.

 

BACHELOR’S STUDIES

The Bachelor's degree studies in Instrumental Music are addressed to musically talented candidates who wish to continue their musical education and, above all, to perfect their instrumental skills on a chosen instrument.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS
BACHELOR’S DEGREE STUDIES

MAIN INSTRUMENT

Performance of a program within the scope of the Secondary Music School Diploma.

Accordion

  1. A polyphonic piece containing a minimum 3-voice fugue.
  2. Domenico Scarlatti – a Sonata (preferred), or other harpsichord composition of the Baroque period.
  3. An original cyclical piece. Performance of selected movements is acceptable, provided that their presentation lasts at least 12 minutes.
  4. Two works of free choice, including one of a virtuoso nature. One of the free pieces must be an original composition for accordion.

Part of the program must be performed from memory.

Guitar

  1. One sonata.
  2. Two etudes including different technical problems.
  3. A piece from the Baroque period (J. S. Bach recommended).
  4. Two pieces of free choice.

Harp

  1. Movement I of the harp concerto.
  2. Concert étude.
  3. Baroque piece.
  4. Sonata, suite or fantasia of your choice.

Violin

  1. J.S. Bach - two movements of any sonata or partita for solo violin.
  2. One caprice.
  3. Concerto (part I or II and III).

Viola

  1. J.S. Bach – two movements from any cello suite (transcribed for solo viola) or J.S. Bach – two movements from any sonata or partita for solo violin (transcribed for solo viola).
  2. One caprice.
  3. Concerto (part I or II and III).

The program shall be performed on the viola. The Faculty Recruitment Committee may agree to perform the program on the violin at the request of a candidate declaring his/her willingness to study in the specialization - viola (while fulfilling the other conditions included in the recruitment regulations).

Cello

  1. J.S. Bach – one movement from a suite for solo cello.
  2. Caprice – A. Piatti or a double note etude.
  3. Two contrasting movements from a sonata or concerto (part I with cadenza or II and III).

Double bass

  1. Two parallel scales (major, minor), passages.
  2. A piece of virtuoso character (etude, caprice, tarantella or variations).
  3. Two movements of a sonata.
  4. A concerto (parts I and II, or parts II and III).
  5. A piece of cantilena character.

Wind and Brass Instruments
(flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba)

  1. Major and minor scales in different variations.
  2. One or two technical pieces (etude, caprice).
  3. Concerto or sonata (representing different styles).
  4. A piece of free choice.

Percussion

  • Vibraphone – solo piece or a piece with accompaniment using the four-mallet technique.
  • Marimba or xylophone – solo piece or a piece with accompaniment.
  • Timpani – a solo piece or a piece with accompaniment.
  • Snare drum – two varied solo pieces:
    – one using the rudiment technique,
    – one using classical technique, including tremolo, grace notes, irregular values and dynamic changes.
  • Set of percussion instruments (multipercussion) – solo piece or piece with accompaniment.

 
OTHER EXAMINATIONS

MASTER’S DEGREE STUDIES

MAIN INSTRUMENT

Accordion

  1. A selected larger form written after 1800 (sonata, suite or variations).
  2. A freely chosen etude.
  3. A piece of early music.
  4. A piece of contemporary music (after 1900).
  5. A freely chosen musical miniature.

The program must be performed from memory.

Harp

  1. Virtuoso etude.
  2. Concerto or sonata (19th - 20th century).
  3. Cadenza from symphonic or operatic works.
  4. A piece of any kind.

Violin, Viola*, Cello

  1. Caprice or solo etude performed from memory.
  2. Two movements of a cyclic work for a solo instrument (sonata, partita or suite) performed from memory.
  3. The first movement of a concerto, or the second and third movements, with piano accompaniment performed from memory, or the first movement of a sonata with piano (from Classicism to contemporary period) – performance from sheet music is allowed.

The pieces must represent three different musical styles.
* The program is performed on the viola. The Faculty Recruitment Committee may agree to the performance of a program on the violin at the request of a candidate declaring a desire to study in the specialization - viola playing (while fulfilling the other conditions included in the recruitment regulations).

Double bass

  1. Concerto with piano accompaniment throughout.
  2. A composition of free choice with a piano.

The program must be performed from memory.

Wind and Brass Instruments
(flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba)

  1. Three pieces in different styles and forms, including one piece required to be performed from memory.

Percussion
A stylistically diverse solo or accompanied recital (30-40 minutes) including a minimum:

  1. one piece on marimba or vibraphone,
  2. one piece on timpani,
  3. one piece on snare drum,
  4. one piece on a set of percussion instruments (multipercussion) or instrumental theatre.

 
INTERVIEW CONCERNING

  • the candidate's motivation for continuing studies;
  • the candidate's specialized interests and expectations regarding the candidate's chosen specialisation;
  • the candidate's career plans.
